Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has a long history of traditional use as a calming, sleep-enhancing plant, from around the 2nd century, to modern day! Though studies attempting to understand the effect of Valerian on the body aren’t conclusive, the proposed mechanism of action supports Valerian’s calming effect due to its multiple indirect interactions with gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, an amino acid that acts to suppress the nervous system. Valerian helps to support the function of GABA by promoting its production, inhibiting its metabolism, and promoting its binding to specific receptors. Overall, these interactions may promote a calmer nervous system. With this information, it comes as no surprise that this root is considered a Nervine — one of a group of plants that are traditionally known to have a soothing and supporting effect on the mind and nervous system. A: Our Organic Glycerin is derived from Rapeseed, a yellow flowering plant in the mustard family Brassicaceae.
Q: Why make a glycerin-based herbal rather than alcohol-based?
A: These botanicals are made through dynamic processes, extracting heat-sensitive compounds with glycerin. This allows for more bioavailability of the organic compounds found in the herbs that would otherwise be denatured and rendered inert by alcohol. Our herbal products are glycerites, which means that the botanicals are steeped in glycerin to extract the beneficial constituents and compounds contained in the botanical(s).
Rather than thinking of it like a recipe, where a certain amount of x is added to y, it may be easier to think of it like a tea bag steeped in hot water. The tea it produces doesn't contain what was contained in the tea bag (otherwise you're drinking small bits of whatever was in your tea bag!), but the steeping process pulls flavors, aromatics, and various compounds from the bag of tea.
